Impact

We firmly believe that our PSHE curriculum is essential for children to become confident, tolerant and well-rounded adults. They will have developed skills needed for life-long learning such as tackling social and emotional issues, global issues and problems and their part in being a global citizen, a good understanding of what health relationships are and being respectful and tolerant of others who may lead different lives to themselves.

Intent

At Tibberton CE Primary school we ensure our PSHE (including RSE) curriculum provides pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community. Through delivering PSHE across the school we aim to encourage pupils to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of their school and communities, so they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning.

PSHE allows pupils to reflect on their experiences, and to understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. Specific teaching of PSHE helps pupils to understand and respect our common humanity; diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.

Implementation

At Tibberton we recognise the importance of the Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural development of all children and hence the school has a responsibility to ensure that our school curriculum provides opportunities for all children to develop these skills. The development of Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural understanding threads throughout our school curriculum and is evidenced in everything we do. The development of SMSC supports our school vision of “Being the best we can be because with God all things are possible”.

At Tibberton, we seek to promote our six core Christian values of compassion, thankfulness, friendship, honesty, forgiveness and courage alongside our PSHE curriculum. We believe these help to prepare our children for a successful and fulfilling life in a forever changing world, being:

highly principled with moral, spiritual, cultural and social awareness, including shared British Values.

Approaches used in school to support children understand and manage their emotional health and well-being include the use of an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) who works with individuals and groups of children. We have also adopted the Calm Brain approach by Dr Taylor to use with the whole class, promoting mindfulness techniques.

Throughout the school year, Tibberton Primary also participates in National and International events that support PSHE, for example, Internet Safety Day, Anti-Bullying Week, Red Nose Day, Children in Need.

British society is founded on fundamental values and principles, which all those living in the UK should respect and support. These values are reflected in the responsibilities, rights and privileges of being a British citizen or permanent resident of the UK.

These values are democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs. Pupils will encounter these principles every day within school through our promotion of spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding.

We have democratically elected pupil councils and House Captains whose representatives meet to share pupils views and who are involved in key decision making throughout school. Pupil voice is very important and our Tibberton Safeguarding Team and Pupil Voice Council are active in promoting initiatives throughout the school including leading assemblies on positive behaviour, Anti-Bullying and the NSPCC PANTS programme.

We have recently introduced the Jigsaw scheme of work as a vehicle for our teaching of PSHE through a whole-school curriculum approach. More information about this scheme can be found here: Jigsaw.

What is Jigsaw PSHE?

Jigsaw PSHE is a comprehensive and completely original Scheme of Work for the whole Primary School from Years F1 and 2 through to Year 6. It brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning.

SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development opportunities are mapped throughout. All of these pieces of learning are brought together to form a cohesive picture, helping children to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in the world. Jigsaw contributes, as a good PSHE programme should, to the British Values agenda very significantly, both through the direct teaching of information and through the experiential learning children will enjoy.

Jigsaw also helps to support the Prevent Strategy. The main way in which Jigsaw offers support is through the adoption of a whole-school approach; our school fosters a climate of mutual understanding and respect.
