Impact
Our curriculum for Art has been carefully planned to give children the skills and knowledge to develop in the different areas of art and to have opportunities to experience and explore new aspects of Art. It also allows children to develop their expressive language, be able to make comparisons and ask questions.
Pupils build up different examples of the diversity of art, craft and design traditions, and go on to produce their own art within this framework. Practice is built in throughout the curriculum. As pupils move through the art curriculum, they build on their knowledge. When pupils know more, they develop capacities to do more and so develop their expertise; pupils build sufficient knowledge and skills that could enable them to achieve a degree of specialism and proficiency in art.
In assessing art, pupils and teachers use disciplinary questions such as ‘what is art?’ ‘how is art made?’ ‘what is the purpose of art?’ ‘how does design affect the lives of its users?’ ‘how does design affect human environments?’.
We also link Art & Design to SMSC and consider how it helps to prepare our pupils for life in modern Britain. Art & design allow children opportunities to explore other countries and cultures, and find out how different people make a living in these fields, realising that art and design can contribute economically as well as aesthetically to the world. As part of the curriculum, we consider the social responsibility of artists and designers to reflect the world around them, as well as providing escapism and a way to understand current and past events. Our pupils understand the spiritual link through exploring art objects at Church and in other places of worship. Through sharing our art and design work, we are contributing to society and sharing our views of the world.
Intent
At Tibberton, we offer children ways to artistically express their ideas and feelings and communicate them to others using a variety of media. The children consider the style and work of artists; masters and modern works, the elements of Art and will visit an art gallery to experience public artworks on display. Pupils at Tibberton will create and communicate their thoughts and ideas through the medium of art, using techniques to create different effects using a range of media and artistic skills.
There are three domains of art: practical knowledge (developing technical proficiency), theoretical knowledge (cultural and contextual learning about artists and artwork) and disciplinary knowledge (how art is studied, discussed and judged). We aim to give pupils opportunities to learn within all three of these domains.
Tibberton CE Primary aims to:
- Maximise the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement in this area by teaching new techniques and skills.
- Have opportunities to discuss great works of Art by leading artists and sculptors through ‘Talk Time’ approaches children.
- Personalise learning opportunities so that children can develop their own unique styles and preferences of art.
- Appreciate the work of great artists, architects and designers in history and have exposure the wealth of art work that is apparent in the wider world.
Implementation
We follow the Programmes of Study for Art as outlined in the National Curriculum for Key Stage One and Two. The curriculum coverage is mapped out on our Long Term planning matrix and we take a whole school approach to our Art Curriculum using the progression documents and focus on one art technique each half term, personalising it to our class theme.
The techniques of Art pupils will be covering are:

- 3D including sculpture

As a school we have mapped out the techniques and skills we will be covering each term. This way we are able to monitor clear progression from Reception to Year 6. In Reception, art and design are core in supporting development of fine motor skills, and opportunities for this are planned both inside and outside the classroom. Drawing is central to an art curriculum, so this skill is revisited regularly through other opportunities, for example art club, the National Gallery’s ‘Take One Picture’ initiative and ‘Ten Minute Draw’ time.

MUSIC
Impact
At Tibberton, children have access to a clearly sequenced music curriculum, which allows them to be creative and express themselves, this develops our values of self-belief, teamwork and ambition. Music also develops the children’s understanding of culture, history and mutual respect.
We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- Pupil discussions and interviews about their learning
- An assessment of standards achieved, judged against the skills and knowledge outlined in our Curriculum map.
- Evidence of pupils work, gathered at the end of units
By the time children leave Tibberton, they will play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and play musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression. Children will improvise and compose music for a range of purposes and listen with attention to detail. They will appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality music drawn from different traditions and composers.
Intent
Music plays an important part in the life of Tibberton C.E Primary School. Here at Tibberton, pupils are engaged and inspired by music, developing a love of music and their talent as musicians.
We will create an engaging and inspiring music curriculum that promotes a love of music and singing across a broadened curriculum so that pupils’ develop as musicians, increase self confidence, creativity and have a sense of belonging.
Tibberton CE Primary aims to:
- expose children to a variety of music and increase their knowledge and understanding of music through the Arts Trust Materials.
- play instruments, both percussion and pitched (recorder)
- appreciate music
- perform before an audience
- sing confidently
- record their compositions
- compose creatively
- develop confidence in their own performance and ability
Implementation
Here at Tibberton we follow the year-by-year Programmes of Study for Music as outlined in the National Curriculum for Key Stage One and Two. To personalise our curriculum, we use the Charanga Scheme for Music which supports all the requirements of the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage.
Curriculum Journey Music
On a weekly basis, the children at Tibberton are exposed to music from a variety of genres and weekly singing assemblies are held for children to be immersed in a range of different music.
Children at Tibberton are invited to join in activities such as Young Voices, Armonico Consortium and The Big Sing; given opportunities to perform to an audience throughout the year. This enables all pupils to take part, showcase their talent and build self confidence. Telford 7 Wrekin Music Service regularly present musical instrument taster sessions and the school offers individual music lessons on a range of instruments.
Children at Tibberton are invited to join a school choir and are given opportunities to perform to an audience through the year, including solo performances in church and in school productions. Children are given the opportunity to discuss their likes and dislikes and share their musical appreciation.
