Class 1 Newsletter Autumn 1
Welcome to Class 1 with Ms Wilkinson and Mrs Osborne!
“Children in early years thrive” (Ofsted, May 2024)
This is where your Tibberton journey begins…
Class 1 is home to our youngest learners here at Tibberton for our Nursery and Reception-aged children. In the Early Years, we value the opportunity to learn through play, and therefore we strive to provide endless opportunities to learn through doing and talking. Play unlocks opportunities for imagination, building connections, development of language and growth in independence.
Reception has seven Areas of Learning in the Early Years Statutory Framework:
- Communication and Language
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Physical Development
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
More information about our whole school curriculum journey can be found here: Tibberton Long Term Plan
Literacy
Through carefully planned activities and lessons, children will continually develop their phonemic awareness in the Early Years. This is the ability to identify and manipulate sounds in spoken words. At Tibberton, we use a phonics scheme named Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. Each child in Reception receive a daily taught phonics lesson where they learn new phonemes (spoken sounds) and corresponding graphemes (letter or letters that represent spoken sounds) and apply this to reading and spelling words. Alongside phonics, we have a large emphasis on developing vocabulary, imagination and a love of reading through exposure to high-quality texts that are shared with the children daily. Nursery children will follow Little Wandle Foundations.
Every child in class 1 will choose their own ‘Reading for Pleasure’ book. There is no expectation for the children to read this book independently, please share it with them. Children in Reception will take an additional book home that is matched to our phonics programme. Please encourage your child to read their phonics book at least three times a week and ensure that the reading book and diary are sent into school every day.
Mathematics
In Early Years, we use White Rose Maths and provide practical tasks. This focuses largely on subitising, composition, cardinality and comparison of numbers to provide a deep understanding of number and the foundations for problem solving and reasoning which can be taken through their Tibberton journey, fostering life-long mathematicians. This is enhanced with exploration of shape and measure.
