Welcome to Class 1 with Ms Wilkinson!

“Children in early years thrive” (Ofsted, May 2024)

This is where your Tibberton journey begins…

Class 1 is home to our youngest learners here at Tibberton for our Reception-aged children. In the Early Years, we value the opportunity to learn through play, and therefore we strive to provide endless opportunities to learn through doing and talking. Play unlocks opportunities for imagination, building connections, development of language and growth in independence.

Reception has seven Areas of Learning in the Early Years Statutory Framework:

  1. Communication and Language
  2. Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  3. Physical Development
  4. Literacy
  5. Mathematics
  6. Understanding the World
  7. Expressive Arts and Design

More information about our whole school curriculum journey can be found here: Tibberton Long Term Plan

Literacy

Through carefully planned activities and lessons, children will continually develop their phonemic awareness in the Early Years. This is the ability to identify and manipulate sounds in spoken words. At Tibberton, we use a phonics scheme named Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. Each child in Reception receive a daily taught phonics lesson where they learn new phonemes (spoken sounds) and corresponding graphemes (letter or letters that represent spoken sounds) and apply this to reading and spelling words. Alongside phonics, we have a large emphasis on developing vocabulary, imagination and a love of reading through exposure to high-quality texts that are shared with the children daily.

Please ensure that your child’s reading book and diary are sent into school every day. We will read with your child three times each week and record this in your child’s reading diary.

Mathematics

In Reception, we use Mastering Number. This focuses largely on subitising, composition, cardinality and comparison of numbers to provide a deep understanding of number and the foundations for problem solving and reasoning which can be taken through their Tibberton journey, fostering life-long mathematicians. This is enhanced with exploration of shape and measure.

17.4.23 Home Learning Ideas

Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful Easter holidays. We are launching our new topic ‘From Farm to Fork’ this half term and we are starting this week by focussing upon the text ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ by one of our favourite authors – Julia Donaldson. We will be learning about farm animals this week and how they can be compared. In phonics, we are starting teaching of Phase 4 and consolidating our Phase 3 knowledge in reading. Maths will focus upon counting beyond 20 and ordering numbers to 10. Take a look at some home learning ideas below that you may want to explore together. Phonics sheets will be attached to next week’s post after a week of phonics teaching.
