Smart Phones & Watches
We have noticed an increase in the use of smart watches and children bringing mobile phones into school. These devices, as well as having a high monetary value, present a number of issues for us as staff at school.
The integration of cameras into phones/smart watches has the potential to lead to child and data protection issues with regard to pupils recording and photographing each other and potentially using them inappropriately.
All families have signed up to let school know if they are happy for images to be taken and used. This choice around use of data is not in place for pupil’s personal devices and therefore is a safeguarding risk.
These devices can leave children vulnerable. They can be hacked and in some cases media content on these watches has also been accessed.
We encourage children to wear appropriate watches to school but would please ask that any smart watches which have an image/recording function are not brought into school. Fitness watches, such as Fitbits, that only count steps and tell the time are suitable to wear.
